The short answer
For the US First Response Early Result leaflet linked here, read at 3 minutes and within 10 minutes. Two pink lines can differ in darkness. Check the leaflet supplied with your own product, because First Response versions and markets differ.
“First Response” is a brand; “Early Result” is a particular test. That distinction matters when looking up a faint line, an evap question or a photo scanner.
US Early Result: the instruction reference
The linked US leaflet is revision FRIN-90127-30S / 72031504. It describes one pink line as not pregnant, two pink lines as pregnant, and no lines at 3 minutes as invalid. It says to disregard changes after 10 minutes. These instructions apply to that product, not automatically to every First Response test. First Response Early Result: US instruction leaflet (PDF).
Put the leaflet next to your test and check that the name and diagram match. If your packaging gives different directions, use the supplied leaflet or ask the manufacturer to identify the right version.
FRER, faint lines and photo checks
FRER is the shorthand often used for First Response Early Result. Someone searching for a “First Response line checker” may want a second look at a photograph, while someone searching for an evaporation line may be asking whether a late mark counts. Those are different problems.
A photo-review app can help you look closely at the captured window. It cannot establish when a line appeared if you did not record that, and it cannot replace the product’s result key. Avoid reading a confidence score as a manufacturer-approved result.

Keep these details with your image
- The complete product name and country of purchase.
- The time you used the test and the time you took the photograph.
- The untouched photo, with the whole result window visible.
- The relevant instruction diagram, kept separately for reference.
That short record is more useful than repeatedly exporting brighter and sharper versions of the same small crop.
Australian products and other versions
First Response names such as In-Stream and Dip & Read appear in other markets. Do not use the US Early Result timings above as a default for a different package. Our brand and country guide explains how to find the matching instructions.
If the question is about a mark first seen after the permitted time, read the time-limit guide. If it was visible in time but hard to photograph, start with capturing the result window.
